Eulogy for a Seal, a poem by Karina Tynan

IMG_0764The sea was blue before I saw you,

before I heard your mother cry,

“Everything is worse without you:

the earth, the sea, the sky.”

The sea was blue before I thought

a crow or seagull must have fought

for your changeling eyes.

It’s in the myth, not many know,

you came to sea from a human line:

Once upon a time..

… taken from a mother jailed by prophesy:

you, to kill the one eyed king.

The one eyed king to save himself

sacked you to the sea to breathe

your last few baby’s breaths,

your first few as a seal.

On a day like this. The sea was blue

before you heard your mother cry:

“Everything is worse without you:

the earth, the sea, the sky.”
