Recently I read a new edition of Finn and his Companions by Standish O’ Grady published in 1921. It is a precious book to have so I decided to share a few pages of the wisdom of Fionn mac Cumhaill.
To be a member of the Fianna poetry was one of the qualities warriors were required.
Below are a few words in praise of women and his mother. The background is : Fionn’s father Cumhaill, leader of the Fianna died at the battle of Cnuchna, so Muirne, his mother had to part with him for his safety. The leader of another clan took the leadership of the Fianna. His name was Goll Mac Morna who would have killed her baby if he found him to secure his leadership. Muirne gave him over to two warrior women called Bodhmhall and Liath Luachra. That was until he went walkabout with six poets. This is the but the beginning of his story. To read more tales from The Fionn Cycle from the women’s perspective go to my book SÍDH : Stories from the Women in Irish Mythology https://karinatynan.com/shop/shop/sidh-stories-from-the-women-in-irish-mythology/
Also one of Fionn’s own poems.
Also a few words about the dark or the shadow that is always there that we need to accept to keep in check.
